Irène Lawson-Hellu always dreamed of owning a clothing store. Now that dream is a reality, and Lamodaboutik, her own boutique offering clothing, fashion accessories and wigs, will officially open for business on May 20, 2017.

Irène Lawson-Hellu

Irène Lawson-Hellu has been working on this project since she arrived in Manitoba a decade ago. The Togo native has always loved fashion, hair styling and jewelry. “It's really my passion,” she says. “I gained a lot of related experience in Togo. When I came to Winnipeg, I realized that this was my chance.”

Irène Lawson-Hellu started taking steps to put her plan into action. She patiently worked as a caregiver and counsellor to raise the necessary capital to open her own business. To maximize her chances of success, she also sought out advice from CDEM. “I worked with CDEM to better prepare myself to start a business. Five years ago, I attended the Business Start workshop, which really helped me.”

To offer the widest possible range of merchandise, Irène Lawson-Hellu uses the purchase-resale model for her business. She identifies current fashion items in Europe, Africa and North America, and buys interesting finds for resale in her shop.

Located in the heart of St. Boniface, Lamodaboutik specializes in traditional African clothing, wigs, hair extensions, jewellery and other accessories such as purses and African fabrics. “The store features clothing for all cultures, with both evening and casual wear for women and children. We also have something for men, including jewellery!”

“I am delighted that my dream has finally come true! I want to help people find what they're looking for and showcase rare and unique pieces.”

Officlal opening of Lamodaboutik on May 20th.
