Ellice

The Rural Municipality of Ellice is located in the western section of the province, at the Manitoba/Saskatchewan border; the fork of the Assiniboine and Qu’Appelle rivers is found in the southeast corner of the municipality, site of the town of St. Lazare. The major urban centers located within proximity to the municipality are: Brandon (100 km to the southeast), Portage la Prairie (200 km to the southeast) and Winnipeg (300 km to the southeast).

Nestled in the bottom of the valley between the flood plain and valley hillsides of the Assiniboine river, the geographic location of the municipality accounts for its outstanding natural beauty. The majority of the land in the municipality abounds in natural resources and offers a wide variety of possibilities in the areas of recreation, tourism, ecotourism as well as light industry. These areas of interest are consistently found among the fastest growing sectors of the Canadian economy and also help to preserve local nature and heritage. They can also have a positive impact on existing industries and create interesting spin-off opportunities for the region.

The municipality is also widely known for the potash deposits it holds in common with the province of Saskatchewan. The potash mine is owned by Potash Corporation of Saskatchewan and is located approximately 10 kilometers west of the municipality (in Rocanville, Saskatchewan). Tours of the mine are available to the public in both French and English and visitors can go on underground tours to a depth of 3,200 feet.
