Montcalm

The Rural Municipality of Montcalm is located in the Red River Valley, 60 km south of the capital city Winnipeg. There are three Francophone towns located within the municipality limits: St. Jean-Baptiste, Letellier and St. Joseph, which were all founded in the latter half of the 19th century.

To ensure the ongoing growth and economic strength of the municipality well into the future, the residents united their efforts and resources in the early 1970s to create the Montcalm Community Development Corporation (MCDC). The MCDC includes a number of subcommittees: economic development, tourism, agriculture as well as education. It also collaborates, along with the Association of Manitoba Bilingual Municipalities (AMBM), with the regional Pembina Valley Development Corporation as well as the Triple R Community Futures Development Corporation, among others.

Agriculture is one of the leading industries in the municipality. The fertile lands of the region are ideal for growing crops such as wheat, barley, flax, oats, corn, canola, and sunflowers. St. Joseph is in an area known for their bean crops and St. Jean Baptiste has been dubbed the “Soup Pea Capital of Canada.” Export products include seeds and specialty crops (including the aformentioned beans and soup peas), as well as a growing demand for alfalfa, with a certain portion being exported to American dairy farmers. Hog and cattle farms can also be found in Montcalm, in addition to the dairy farms in the St. Joseph and Letellier area.
