Although CDEM’s programs are typically presented in-person in a classroom setting, CDEM staff was able to develop new methods to present the financial literacy programs virtually with a newly adapted schedule to accommodate a greater number of school groups simultaneously.

Financial literacy for kindergarten students

Thanks to this innovative online program delivery, CDEM staff and volunteers held 140 presentations throughout the school year, reaching 2,200 students from various French and French immersion schools in Manitoba. For the very first time, CDEM also offered programs aimed at kindergarten students through storytelling and live readings of Les contes qui comptent, a series of short stories developed by CDEM in partnership with Apprentissage illimité/aha Learning. This school year alone, 300 kindergarten students learned about financial literacy thanks to the adventures of characters Paul and Suzanne.

“Virtual learning was an opportunity to expand CDEM’s youth program offerings and reach students in new areas of Manitoba where we couldn’t easily travel to in the past. Through a lot of hard work and ingenuity, our staff and volunteers continued to deliver our high-quality financial literacy programs with much success throughout the 2020-2021 school year to French and French immersion schools in Manitoba,” explains Joel Martine, Director of Youth Services at Economic Development for Manitoba Bilingual Municipalities (CDEM).

Classroom financial literacy programs are offered free of charge for students in kindergarten to Grade 12.
