In a context marked by the tariff war and evolving economic relations between Canada and the United States, the Association of Manitoba Bilingual Municipalities (AMBM) has issued a joint statement highlighting the essential role of bilingualism as a driver of prosperity for Manitoba and Canada.
On August 25, 2026, the mayors and reeves of Manitoba’s bilingual municipalities joined together to reaffirm that our official languages are a major strategic asset for the province’s economic, social, and community development — and that they are not up for negotiation.
This statement reflects the unity of bilingual municipalities in defending their communities, their businesses, and their ability to build sustainable economic partnerships. It also reminds us that Manitoba’s bilingual advantage helps create new business opportunities, both in Canada and internationally, in a context of economic uncertainty.
